EU Energy Commissioner, Guenther Oettinger on TAP

31 maggio 2010

Dow Jones Newswire reported on the 28th of May 2010, that Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger expressed his support for the TAP project on the side lines of a high-level conference on European energy infrastructure in Madrid.

Oettinger said in an interview: “The European Union needs to catch up on natural gas infrastructure to decrease its energy dependency from Russia and secure supplies for the next 30 to 40 years."

"TAP is an interesting project, that would supplement Nabucco," he added, "it can be implemented fast, and therefore counts on our support."

According to Oettinger, Europe needs to tap into enormous gas resources in the Caspian  region, in particular the second stage of the Shah Deniz gas field development in Azerbaijan, and not leave them to be developed only for China, Russia and Iran.

The Energy Commissioner said that despite the current global oversupply in natural gas, various pipeline projects need to be built to secure energy supply for decades to come.
